A complex multi-step synthesis required an innovative approach to improve yield and reduce cycle time, while maintaining the purity parameters imposed by strict industry standards.
The conventional production process for the chelator intermediate XC-78 involved a 7-step sequence, with a total yield below 40% and a cycle time of over 120 hours. Scalability was limited by oxygen-sensitive reactions and laborious purification steps.
We implemented a convergent synthesis strategy, reconfiguring the order of key steps. We introduced new, selective catalysts and fully automated the isolation and washing steps in a controlled atmosphere environment (nitrogen), eliminating the need for multiple intermediate purifications.
The process was validated in our pilot unit, then scaled to an industrial level. The flow was reduced to 5 essential steps. The final yield increased to 68%, and the cycle time was reduced to 72 hours. The final purity exceeded 99.8%, confirmed by HPLC and mass spectrometry.
